Foam Latex Ludo Head Sculpt
Contextualised model Project
University Module
Materials & Techniques used
Plaster mould making, Foam Latex casting, Hair fabrication, Clay sculpting
This project focused on creating a contextualised model within a notional professional setting, allowing us to think about how our work would function in industry. For my Semester A Professional Context model, I created a highly detailed scale model of Ludo’s head from Labyrinth, placing the project within the context of film and television prop design and practical creature effects.
I chose Ludo because of his expressive design and the challenge of recreating his complex textures, combining both organic and fantastical features. His character offered the perfect opportunity to explore sculptural detail, likeness, and personality while developing a professional-quality creature model.
The model began with a wire armature, over which I sculpted the head using water-based clay. Once the sculpt was complete, I created a plaster mould and cast the final piece in foam latex. The surface was then hand-painted using acrylics in a 50/50 Pax paint mix with Pros-Aide, allowing me to build up colour, texture, and realism while capturing the recognisable look of the original character. I really enjoyed working with foam latex, as it was a new skill for me and gave me the chance to explore practical effects in more depth. It’s a process I’m excited to keep developing and experimenting with in future projects.
