This project’s objective was to create a sculpture using only found and recycled materials. I chose to make an octopus inspired by the impact of plastic waste in the ocean, using the piece to reflect both marine life and the damage caused by discarded materials.
The main structure of the octopus was built using chicken wire to create the form, which was then covered with papier-mâché to add shape, texture, and detail. His tentacles were wrapped in food packaging waste and pieces of plastic bottles, helping to create movement and surface texture while reinforcing the environmental message behind the sculpture.
To add further detail, I used recycled contact lens cases to create the suckers on the tentacles. This helped connect the piece even more closely to its concept, transforming everyday waste into part of the final design. The finished sculpture became both a creative response to the brief and a visual statement about the effect of plastic pollution on sea life.
